What's New?

Happy New Year to all and welcome to our first e-newsletter! We’d like to begin with some news: The Board of Directors recently restructured the Institute to run the Retreat Center (and property) independently from the programmatic core of IONS and named Cathy Coleman as its Executive Director. Cathy has been with the Institute for over five years, and during this time has managed the retreat center and the administrative operations of IONS.

Prior to her work at the Institute, she was President of Kepler College in Lynnwood, Washington, and served for nearly 20 years in various administrative capacities, including Dean of Students, at the California Institute of Integral Studies (CIIS) in San Francisco, where she completed her doctoral studies in East-West Psychology. Currently Cathy is working on a strategic business plan for the Retreat Center, focusing on capital improvements and business development.

What’s Cooking?

Shannon Hughes Image
Chef Shannon Hughes, former chef-owner of the Pangaea Restaurant in Point Arena, began working for the Retreat Center in April of 2008. Chef Shannon, a healer as well as a chef, describes the process of preparing food for people as a “huge energetic life force and a powerful gift. I feel that my work as a healer comes through in feeding people good food, magically prepared.” With ample access to organic, local and seasonal ingredients she creates eclectic, yet simple, flavorful and harmonious meals designed to nurture and nourish the body. She is a self-made chef who did not attend culinary school, but rather learned from and was inspired by her Lebanese grandmother’s love for cooking. Shannon likes to create an atmosphere in her dining rooms for people to connect with each other and with the food that she prepares, and when she’s not in the kitchen she likes to make personal connections with the retreat leaders and program participants.

As the saying goes, “The proof is in the pudding,” and retreat participants frequently leave notes expressing their impressions of the food and the excellent service. “The food here at IONS is fabulous!” wrote Taira Restar with the A. D. Tamalpa Institute. “It’s fresh, delicious and healthy with plenty of choices. Our symposium faculty and participants raved about it.”

  Upcoming Workshops
Expand your mind, open your heart, and activate your full potential with the Institute’s Transformative Learning Workshops. This series embraces the mission of IONS’ Founder and Apollo 14 Astronaut Dr. Edgar Mitchell "to broaden the knowledge of the nature and potentials of mind and consciousness, and to apply that knowledge to the enhancement of human well-being and the quality of life on the planet." Connect with innovative thought leaders who continue IONS' 36-year legacy. Facilitate your intention to manifest transformational potential in yourself and others as you learn through rigorous inquiry, group dialogue, and direct experience. Our magnificent landscape provides a living context for the integration of theory and practice, science and spirituality, and inspiration and renewal.

Fiddlers
  Client Appreciation Dinner
The Retreat Center hosted a beautiful appreciation dinner here on campus for our clients in December. Though they hale from all over the country, we had an enthusiastic turnout of more than 80 people. Jean Houston was our keynote speaker; she encouraged people to continue their deep and transformative work—with even more fervor—during these challenging financial times. The San Francisco Scottish Fiddlers—some 24 of them!—provided wonderful, uplifting music during the reception. They are clients as well, and hold their April practice retreats here at the Center. Artist Jeremy Morgan, also a professor at the San Francisco Art Institute, spoke about his visually stunning show, Realms of Being, currently on exhibit here on our campus.

Art, Culture & Consciousness

The Institute has formed a collaboration with The Lucid Arts Foundation. They will be co-sponsoring art programs and showings on our campus and will curate three or four gallery showings each year. The first co-sponsorship is the current show, Realms of Being, which can be seen in our gallery in the community building through January 30th. The Lucid Art Foundation, co-founded by the late Gordon Onslow Ford, Robert Anthoine, and Fariba Bogzaran, explores the intersection of art, consciousness, and nature through exhibitions, publications, and artist seminars.
