Our Collective Work

Our upcoming conference, Toward a Global Shift, is calling forth wisdom from the four corners of the planet and from diverse sectors of society to build a powerful field for positive, collective change. You'll hear from fascinating scientists, inspiring spiritual leaders, and social entrepreneurs, as well as from the many brilliant individuals like yourself who will join in our innovative group explorations to create new frameworks for our shared future.

This conference takes an interdisciplinary and integrative approach to change that will, in the tradition of the noetic sciences, weave together research experiments, groundbreaking ideas, passionate performances, personal experiences, and community ritual. Through our main-stage events and breakout sessions, our goal is to bring the wisdom gained in our small groups back into the entire conference community to seed dialogues and deepen our experiential journey.

We will explore such evocative questions as:

  • How do we form our beliefs?
  • How might we engage more effectively with beliefs different from our own?
  • What qualities do we see emerging in our global culture today?
  • What is being born now?
  • In what ways can we together dream a new culture into being that is healthy, sustainable, inclusive, and whole?
  • What are the essential practices for us as individuals and for our communities during this time of radical shift?
  • How can we use the ideas and actions of our local communities to help us seed the future we want?

Together we will create one of the most memorable and rejuvenating conferences of your life—complete with music, celebration, laughter, and grounded practices for awakening a new way of being.

Join us June 17-21 in Tucson, Arizona, and register by March 18 to receive the early-bird discount.

Noetic Research

Our research and education programs are forging new pathways to understanding the potentials of human consciousness. Here are a few current examples:

Laboratory
The Institute's laboratory is one of only a few in the world that is actively devoted to scientifically exploring the psychophysical interactions associated with extended human capacities. It is equipped with a wide range of psychophysiological and physical instrumentation, an environmentally shielded testing chamber, and the capacity to explore intuitive and non-sensory interactions between people at a distance, unconscious responses to events distant either in space or time, and mind-matter interactions ranging from basic physics (photons) to biology (cell cultures), psychology (human physiology and behavior), and sociology (small and large groups).

Experimental Tests of the Role of Consciousness in the Physical World
This research addresses the role of consciousness within the context of two fundamental physical theories: quantum mechanics and general relativity. The project's Phase I focuses on how nonlocal observation, the "mind’s eye," interacts with quantum objects, in this case photons within a double-slit optical apparatus. Phase II will study whether intention can directly affect the speed of light as measured in optical fiber. The purpose of these experiments is to go beyond demonstrations of consciousness-related effects and seek to link them with well-accepted physical theories.

Investigating States of Nondual Awareness
This study empirically addresses the question of how we should interpret mystical states of consciousness in meditation. Are reports of being in a "timeless space," for example, mere fantasies or hallucinations? Or do they represent genuinely enhanced levels of awareness that allow us to perceive an ontologically accurate dimension of reality that exists beyond the everyday boundaries of time and space? We will study this question by exploring brain states associated with non-dual states of awareness, and by correlating those states with performance in an experiment designed to measure brain responses to events that will occur a few seconds in the future. If the brain unconsciously anticipates future events, as suggested by previous studies we have conducted, then this experiment will allow us to probe the nature of the timeless states reported in non-dual awareness.

Consciousness and Healing
In Search of Happiness
by Vesela Simic
There has been an unprecedented explosion of interest in the pursuit of happiness. What are scientists learning? Is the quest for happiness appropriate and useful in a time of global instability? What's missing from the discussion, and where is this quest taking us? Its pursuit is more—and less—complicated than we think.

Extended Human Capacities
Twin Telepathy and the Illusion of Separation
by Diane H. Powell
Despite substantial evidence validating psychic phenomena, the scientific community remains largely resistant. Enter the revolutionary phenomenon of telepathic communication between twins. Numerous cases have been accumulating since the late 1800s. If they can't be explained through synchronicity or genetics, what other explanation could there be?

Emerging Worldviews
The Adaptive Organization
by Carol Mase
The strains that most of us are feeling these days are also reflected within our institutions. In attempting to adapt, most still rely on traditional models of change that no longer work in a world where the old rules don't apply. Mase makes the case for a new model that bridges psychology, biology, and the principles of interdependence.

Transformation
A Quiet Revolution: An Interview with Adyashanti
by Steve Donoso
Spiritual teacher Adyashanti, who began his public teachings in 1996, shares his wisdom on the nature of awakening consciousness. "The most powerful impediments to awakening are our beliefs about it," he says. His recommended tools are self-honesty, meditation, and inquiry into primordial silence.

In the News
President Marilyn Mandala Schlitz, PhD, was recently invited to be a keynote speaker at the Transformative Leadership Council conference in Hawaii. The conference drew thought leaders, speakers, authors, coaches, trainers, researchers, and consultants who are leaders in the fields of personal and professional development. Her captivating talk, “Changing our Minds: The Art and Science of Transformation,” touched on principles from the book, Living Deeply, based on a ten-year program of scientific research that explored the phenomenon by which people make significant shifts in the way they view the world and themselves.

State of Global Emergency Declaration - The Institute is a member of the Global Emergency Task Force, which was initiated by the Club of Budapest to call attention to the perilous condition of humanity and to motivate serious endeavors to join forces to cope with it. Ervin Laszlo and David Woolfson have prepared a draft Declaration that is now available for review and endorsement online.

Smiths' Bequest—One Part of a Larger Plan

You might think that the hurricane weather in Slidell, Louisiana, would send residents scrambling to get their estate plans done. But you would never know it from the serene demeanor of Slidell residents David and Dee Smith. "Hurricanes are simply part of living on the Gulf Coast, just as tornadoes and earthquakes are a part of living elsewhere," David said matter-of-factly. As a retired federal ecologist, David is intimately familiar with the coastal states and their vulnerability to storms.

However, common sense and a desire to prepare for the future—not tumultuous weather—led the Smiths to draft a comprehensive estate plan. Because they have no children to inherit their estate by default, they needed a plan both to distribute their assets as they wish at death and to protect them during their remaining years. "Wills are the kind of thing people tend to put off," Dee said. "We didn’t want to wait for an emergency to force us to do our plan."

As specified in their plan, one of their goals is to benefit the Institute of Noetic Sciences. "I found Noetics to be immediately interesting," said David, who became a member in the early '90s. He was especially attracted to its non-doctrinaire way of embracing spirituality. Dee likes the idea that "Noetics is global, and invites everyone to participate to the degree you wish." The Institute is pleased to list David and Dee Smith as members of its Visionary Circle.
