Dinan / The
election of Barack Obama opens a new chapter in American
history, one reflecting a worldview in which diversity
is embraced and a more global citizenship emerges. At
the same time, we are faced with the deepest financial
crisis of our lifetime, which is triggering a contraction
of confidence in our future.
Together,
these two facts offer us a profound opportunity - to
champion the next evolution of our culture and to align
our lives with more sustainable and conscious principles.
On the national level doors will likely open for sustainable
solutions; IONS Fellow Van Jones, for example, has already
helped shape Obama's green jobs policies. On the local
level, the economic contraction presents us with the
opportunity to streamline our lives, derive greater
joy from the things that we have, collaborate with neighbors,
and focus on growth in consciousness vs. excess materialism.
It's
a moment of opportunity for the work we've developed
over so many years, a time in which innovative solutions
are in high demand and in which the principles of consciousness
will come to the foreground.
It
is in that spirit that we invite you to join us at our
International Conference next June
17-21 in Tucson, AZ, which is entitled Toward
a Global Shift: Seeding the Field of Collective Change.
The conference will feature a stellar roster of speakers
such as Van Jones, Bruce Lipton, Chip Conley, Luisah
Teish, Larry and Barbara Dossey, as well as innovative
collaborative processes for groups. We see this as an
opportunity to offer our best solutions to the collective
challenges of our day. Registration will be live on
Dec. 15th.
On
other fronts, the latest issue of Shift magazine
is now reaching members, with provocative articles in
four themed areas: consciousness and healing, extended
human capacities, emerging worldviews, and transformation.
The articles are listed below. When you sign up now
for the $1 trial membership of the
Shift in Action program this month, you can
still receive this issue of the magazine, as well as
the book, Living Deeply written
by IONS researchers; a practice CD; the acclaimed
2008 Shift Report; and all the
offerings SIA members enjoy, including weekly live teleseminars
and the largest web archive of consciousness content.

Consciousness
and Healing
The Everyday Miracle of Healing: A Profile
of Mother Maya
by Catherine Elliott Escobedo
Sri Swamini Mayatitananda survived cancer
(and the fashion industry) to become an expert
in Ayurveda. At the heart of her health model
is the recognition that "each of us has an immutable
spirit that can transcend every challenge." The
path to connecting with that spirit lies in cultivating
our inner awareness.
Extended
Human Capacities
Exploring Consciousness with David Hawkins
Interview by Pamela Becker
Psychiatrist David Hawkins, author of
Power vs. Force, uses behavioral kinesiology
to test the "objective truth" of any statement
and ultimately to map human consciousness. He
has attracted a large audience of people intrigued
by his work and has sparked debate among scientists
who challenge both the technique and his application
of it.
Emerging
Worldviews
The Enduring Enigma of the UFO
by Dean Radin
Despite significant evidence that
something unusual has been going on in the skies
above planet Earth, serious investigation remains
taboo. The result: Far more questions than answers.
Like psi phenomenon, the topic of UFOs provides
a litmus test for what we think we know-or want
to.
Transformation
A World in Transition
by Edmund J. Bourne
With global civilization in the
throes of transition, our guiding values and assumptions
about reality are in flux. In this excerpt from
Global Shift, the latest title from Noetic
Books, Bourne describes both the conceptual and
the practical themes that characterize these fundamental
changes. Also featured is an excerpt about inclusive
politics, "The Noah Principles," from
Van Jones's best-selling book, The Green Collar
Economy.

One
of the holiday tricks that we use to increase
our sustainability and decrease hassle is to use
decorative, reusable gift bags. A bit of tissue
paper on top and a bag makes for an attractive
present. The bags can be reused dozens of times.
When we switched to this method of wrapping, it
saved a whole garbage bag of paper every year.
The added benefit is for those of us who are terrible
at gift wrapping!

DEAR
SWAMI
by Swami Beyondananda
"Where
Swami Answers Your Questions - and You Will Question
His Answers"
Dear
Swami:
What do you see as the spiritual significance of Barack Obama's victory?
Saul Twarter-Taffee,
Ocean City, Maryland
Dear
Saul:
If we see the Presidential vote as a measure
of consciousness, the election is good news
indeed. We've regained consciousness! The
body politic has opted for political climate
change.
The
vote was more than a vote for a new President.
It was a vote for a new precedent - government
of the people, by the people, for the people
where the government does our bidding, not
the bidding of the highest bidder. In the
short term, the up-wising has been successful,
and the American Evolution has begun. The
first big shots have been fired. But now,
if we want to heal the body politic of conditions
like Deficit Inattention Disorder, Truth Decay
and the deadliest one of all, an unchecked
Military Industrial Complex, we must elect
ourselves. Spiritually, it's time to quiet
our barking dogmas and evolve past the Ten
Commandments to an even greater realization
- the One Suggestion: "We are all in
it together." Once a critical mass of
us chooses to live by this credo, we can avoid
the critical massacre called Armageddon, create
Disarmageddon instead, and achieve fulfillment
as a species - Humanifest Destiny.

Monthly
Intention |
|
December
Intention:
At
the beginning of each month, we encourage you
to take a quiet moment to link your intention
with people around the world.
This month we encourage you to hold the intention for a feeling of sufficiency, regardless of your economic situation. By cultivating a sense that we have enough, we derive greater happiness from the things we have, even in the midst of economic challenges.
December
Action:
This month, we encourage you to
look at your lifestyle and write down what elements
are really required for your happiness and what
elements are nice but might not be essential.
This can help shift you into a feeling of sufficiency,
as you recognize that you don't need all you thought
you did.
December
Question for Reflection:
How might you approach
life differently if you started with a belief in
sufficiency?
If
you would like to offer an intention for next
month, please send it here.
