the Story of Our Future
(Our
celebrated 2007 Report is still available here
- PDF version as well)
About
the Upcoming Report
Over the past several decades, new scientific
discoveries along with a surge in grassroots initiatives
addressing social and economic injustices have
begun calling into question the view of the universe-and
essentially of ourselves-as ultimately cold and
mechanistic. Revealing both the mysterious directionality
of the evolving cosmos and the irrepressible humanity
within our own natures, new evidence is emerging
that we are innately capable of far more than
we realize. Yes, the evidence is compelling that
the arc of the human species is on a self-destructive
decline, and yet once the pieces are put together,
there is no denying that another reality is fighting
through the cracks of the dominant narrative.
We are just beginning to tap into our potential
as human beings despite, or perhaps because of,
the multiple crises that we are facing.

This
month we highlight IONS shift to organic, local
food in our Retreat Center. We now use about 80%
organic food in the meals we serve on campus,
much of it from local farms with progressive practices
such as the Strauss Family Dairy. At the dairy,
they are not only local, organic and sustainable,
but they also use a methane digester to convert
their plentiful supplies of cow manure into 95%
of the electricity used to run their business.
And they use it to recharge their electric car!
The
kind of food we eat and where it is grown has
a big impact on the environment, so we are putting
our sustainable principles into practice with
the shift to local and organic.

Living
Deeply |
|
Living
Deeply is a new program based on over ten years
of scientific research exploring how people make
significant shifts in the way they view the world
and themselves.
The
Living Deeply book is already spurring
considerably excitement and accolades. Deepak
Chopra says it is a "A brilliant synthesis of
science and wisdom from the world's greatest spiritual
traditions, both ancient and modern, translated
into practical tools for anyone who is seeking
more depth and meaning in their life.” (buy
now)
Our
new Living Deeply website (www.livingdeeply.org)
will serve as a hub for elearning and community
building around the themes of the book.
Our
new teleseminar series will build upon this
extraordinary research with spiritual teachers
and practical visionaries who have learned how
to live fully and deeply. It will be held every
Tuesday during the lunch hour (11 am Pacific)
and will be designed to inspire you in practical
ways to live more deeply.
Upcoming
guests: Riane Eisler, Ed Bastian, and Stephen
Post.
We'll
be using this space in iShift each month
to share resources to inspire you to live more
deeply. Send
us your ideas and requests!

Spotlight: Steve Vernon and the Quest
"What's
the best way to live the rest of our lives?"
This question has become increasingly important
to IONS Circle member, Steve Vernon, who now at
age 54 is more than half-way to 100. Answering
this question is key to his life's work of helping
people realize their potential for their retirement,
or as he likes to say, their rest-of-life.
Steve
has put his skills, insights, and life experiences
together in workshops, presentations, writings,
and productions to help people plan for their
happiness, health, and wealth in their later years.
His latest work is a DVD/booklet combination called
The Quest: For Long Life, Health and Prosperity.
"My life's work, relationships, and interests
are coming together into a great mix for my rest-of-life,
and for that, I'm very grateful."

of Circle membership, contact Deborah Breitbach

Excerpts
from...
 Swami
Beyondananda's 2008 State of the Universe Address
Swami
Predicts Heart Times Ahead
Every
year at this time, I am asked to make predictions,
and each time I politely refuse because I
don't want to jeopardize my nonprophet status.
But this year is different. With 2012 just
one quantum leap year away, we humans might
finally be ready for a quantum leap of our
own. The message is coming in loud and clear.
Time to shift or get off the pot.
In
order to upshift our karma into surpassing
gear, however, we must shift our awareness
downward from the static of the head to the
ecstatic of the heart. If we are to have an
awakening instead of a wake, I predict heart
times ahead.
Yes,
everyone is equipped to attune to universal
wisdom because everyone has been given a heart.
And yet, the heart seems to be the last gift
we open. The most underdeveloped resource
on the planet is the treasure inside our own
treasured chest! Given all the craziness in
the world, maybe if we invested in expanding
our hearts, we'd have less need to shrink
our heads.
As
the saying goes, money can't buy happiness,
although it can buy anti-depressants. But
if you are seeking more out of life than not
being depressed, the key to happiness is to
grow your own. Every one of us should be asking,
"What good am I?" What good can I add to the
greater goodness? Maybe if we had greater
goodness, we'd need fewer goods. As human
beings, our biggest asset is love, so now
is the time to get up off our big fat assets,
and practice supply-side spirituality. Because
we aren't here to earn God's love, we are
here to spend it. We are here to re-grow the
Garden from the grassroots up, and have a
heaven of a time doing it!

Monthly
Intention |
|
February
Intention:
The
first of every month at noon (US Pacific), we
encourage you to take a quiet moment to link your
intention with people around the world. This month,
our intention is to live more deeply. Whatever
we are working on in the world is fueled by our
inner state. If that is frantic, stressed, or
depleted, our life will be much less satisfying
(and effective). We encourage you to hold the
intention to strengthen whatever practices you
need to live more deeply.
February
Action:
This month, we encourage you to
take one hour a week and do absolutely nothing, not even consciously meditating. Residing in stillness
can be deeply refreshing to body, mind, and spirit.
February
Question for Reflection:
What if we shifted
our focus from achieving more to simply living more
deeply? How might we reorient our days?
If
you would like to offer an intention for next
month, please send it here.
