This
month, we're blessed that volunteers have transcribed
some of the more than 30 Essential Shifts interviews.
We share three:
Jean
Houston, with James O'Dea - "We're between
two eras. Whenever you have two eras you always have
radical fundamentalism rising, as people try to sanctify
their mediocrity and thus feel safe and secure - because
not only do the new maps not fit the territory, there's
no map, we don't know what the territory is, and it
is the pathless path."
Stanislav Grof - "We have many separate movements
- the pacifist movement, the ecological movement, the
feminist movement, and so on. But I think we need to
bring them together and have all these movements spiritually
informed."
Elisabet Sahtouris - "We have all
these indications that we are right at our own stage
of maturing into global family cooperation."
If you'd like to volunteer to transcribe three and receive
free Shift in Action memberships, contact Jeff Kihn

in Action / Featured Channel |

Radical Spirit
The
Radical Spirit channel explores the meeting
point between consciousness and societal change,
highlighting leaders who exemplify spiritual
depth and passionate engagement in public processes,
as well as offering practical steps to engage
change work in life-enhancing ways. Our preference
is to look at the leading edge - how is a more
integral version of spiritual activism emerging
in a next generation of leaders? How are these
leaders engaging the public sphere? In the last
year, we've hosted teleseminars with Van
Jones, Marianne Williamson, Rabbi Michael Lerner,
Corinne McLaughlin and Gordon Davidson, Arjuna
Ardagh, Noah Levine, Anodea Judith, Manuel Herrera,
and Walter Semkiw. Partners
can now download all of these teleseminars from
our Radical Spirit home page. Coming this fall:
Donna Zajonc and Matthew
Sanford.

Sacred Wound"

her book, In

"Each
of us has a sacred wound. It is what makes us
both human and divine. It weaves its way into
the warp and weft of our lives like an invisible
thread that tugs at the twilight of our longing;
it twists our unconscious into knots until, one
day, it shapeshifts into an arrow that pierces
our complacency and cannot be denied. If we embrace
our sacred wound, if we make peace with it, it
delivers us into the waiting arms of Spirit."

Fresh
IONS Library Developed Thanks to Member Donation
IONS
is deeply grateful for the recently received gift
of a 4000-volume library, amassed over several
decades, from the estate of long-term Circle member
and IONS advocate, the late Fred Bernard Wood,
Ph.D. (1917-2006). Facilitated by his two sons,
Frederick Bruce Wood, Jr. and Peter Mead Wood,
the family chose IONS for the library donation
because we share Fred's cross-discipline
perspective. "We are pleased, and we know
that Fred Sr. is ecstatic, that these books are
now available to the IONS staff, members, and
visitors," says son Fred Jr.

For information on Circle membership, call Kathleen
Erickson-Freeman at 707.779.8232 or at KathleenEricksonFreeman@noetic.org.

Swami
Beyondananda Answers Your Questions - and You Will
Question His Answers
Dear
Swami:
How do we shift Western culture away from causing
global warming?
Helen Highwater, Annapolis, Maryland
Dear Helen:
Well, the first thing is we have to shift our
lifestyle from things that cause more global
warming to things that reduce it. So I propose
a slogan: "Global warming just ain't
cool." I see a cartoon where Mother Earth
has the hand of a young boy, who is pointing
longingly at a brand new Humvee, and she is
saying, "I'm sorry son, but your
mother just can't afford that right now."
Meanwhile, we have to take on the mission to
"re-grow the Garden from the grassroots
up" and begin to plant the green things
that will help transform carbon dioxide into
oxygen. Like trees. They are rooting for us,
you know. And - back to lifestyle - we need
to make a new fashion statement that the Earth
can wholeheartedly agree with. No more of this
close-cropped brush cut. The Earth is ready
to grow her forests long again.
Finally, we must deal with the issue of overpopulation,
and I think I have the answer: multiple personalities.
Think about it. When you cram two, three or
even a dozen personalities into one body, think
of how much less food we'd need, not to
mention the extra space. It's just mathematical
logic: If we had more multiple personalities,
we'd need fewer people!

Personal
Connections / Monthly Intention |
|
October
Intention:
This
month, we encourage you to take a quiet moment
to link your intention with people around the
world in support of healing. Together, we affirm
that we are each whole beings and that our psychological
and physical wounds are healing in their own way
and with perfect timing.
October
Action:
This month, we encourage you
to take one action with that might contribute
to someone's healing. Perhaps you could
lend an ear for an hour to a friend in need, just
providing loving presence and support.
October
Question for Reflection:
What would it look like if we
started each day with the intention to be a healing
presence that day for all with whom we come into
contact?
This month's member intention comes to us from Janet Lawson:
"My intention is to let go of bitterness.
To relax the muscles in my heart that hold onto
who didn't say what I wanted to hear - or what
didn't turn out the way I wanted it to. The feelings
that come from bitterness are tightness, cold,
isolation, forcing currents. The feelings that
awaken when bitterness is dropped are openness,
warmth, connecting to others and the life force
in everything."
If
you'd like to offer an intention for next month,
please send it here.
